7 Must Know Facts About The 990
1.
The 990 is a form for nonprofit organizations that provides information to the IRS; it's like a tax return but it is not. Form 990 is considered an annual information form.
2.
Nonprofits must file every year even if your nonprofit does not make income.
3.
Nonprofits who do not file for 3 consecutive years will automatically lose their exempt
status.
4.
Certain religious, government and political organizations are exempt from filing the 990.
5.
The deadline for filing the 990 is on the 15th
day of the 5th month after your fiscal year ends. Example: If your fiscal year ends on December 31st, the due date for filing your 990 is May 15th of the next year.

6.
The purpose of the 990 is to give the IRS an overview of the organization's activities, governance and detailed financial information.
7.
Nonprofits who do not file on time without a reasonable excuse may be fined a penalty. The maximum penalty for organization's gross receipts under $1 million is the lesser of $10,000 or 5 percent of the organization's gross receipts. For an organization that has gross receipts of over $1 million for the year, the penalty is $100 a day up to a maximum of $50,000.
